Frequently Asked Questions
What is Core Shamanism?
Shamanic practise spans across continents and cultures as a key element of human society. The anthropologist Michael Harner studied shamanism extensively and identified similarities regardless of culture or geographical location. He termed this ‘core shamanism’ and started the Foundation of Shamanic Studies (FSS) with a view to teaching shamanic practise to the West as well as supporting the existing shamanic elements of indigenous cultures under threat. I have undergone training as a shamanic practitioner with the FSS (certificates available on request).
The principles of core shamanism are:
A shift of consciousness by the shamanic practitioner with the aim of accessing information and healing relevant to the client, via the facilitation of spirit helpers or guides.
The use of drumming or rattling to facilitate this shift and entering what is known as ‘non-ordinary reality’ or the ‘shamanic state of consciousness’.
What can I expect during a shamanic session?
My sessions are very gentle and down to earth. After some initial discussion and divination to further hone in on the issue you need help with, I will perform drumming, rattling and singing, so that I can enter into a light trance and bring back healing and guidance from my spirit helpers. All you need to do during this stage is relax!
Will I feel any particular sensations or emotions during a shamanic session?
I have had clients who have reported some physical sensations (but no pain) during sessions, as well as some emotional reactions, for example crying. Other clients, by contrast, have not felt anything at all, so it really depends on the person. The session can be stopped at any point if you do not wish to continue, and is completely safe.
Are there any contraindications to having a shamanic session (medications or diagnoses)?
Any form of psychosis (for example, shizophrenia), neurological disorders, heart problems and epilepsy are usually contraindicated. If you are on medication for any mental health issue (for example. depression or anxiety), I may still be able to work with you but I must have prior permission from your GP or consultant.
What about chronic or terminal illness, such as cancer?
Shamanic intervention cannot replace conventional medicine: instead it supports and facilitates the client’s journey, aiming to remove any unhelpful emotional blockages, to assist the client to live as fulfilled a life as possible.
Do you use ayahuasca or other hallucinogens during a session, or give these substances to clients?
Absolutely not. Core shamanism does not promote the use of any sort of hallucinogenic plants or drugs; and in fact the majority of shamanic traditions around the world do not use them. The client is in a relaxed state during the session, but is in full control of all their faculties, similar to a reiki or energy healing session. I as the shamanic practitioner will enter a state of light trance to carry out the work, via a mixture of drumming, ratlling, movement, whistling and singing only.
Why are you currently only offering shamanic services via video conferencing?
Shamanic work via zoom is just as effective as in person; but for those who are keen for a more traditional experience, I will be setting up a practice venue in London and offering local home visits in the autumn of 2023.
What is Divination?
Divination has existed for millenia across all cultures of the globe. It involves using objects, consulting with 'higher self' or spirit guides, or looking at signs in nature to gain guidance and clarity in all areas of life. Divination cannot predict the future, but helps to open insight and build confidence when making choices on your life's path. Divination methods that I use during a reading include tarot, runes, oracle cards, ogham sticks and pendulums.
What are Tree Tonics?
Tree tonics harness the spiritual essence of willing trees, to help boost and balance emotional issues. Every tree has specific areas in which they can be of most benefit. Each essence is provided in a 20ml dropper bottle, to be taken daily under the tongue or in juice, tea or water; and if taken as instructed, lasts for around a month. Tree essences also contain mineral water and cider brandy.
